How this comparison works

Energy cost = your yearly usage × the plan's listed rate (¢/kWh or $/GJ). Rates are the residential plans the Utilities Consumer Advocate (UCA) lists for each retailer. We copied them on the date shown and didn't change any.

Admin fees are shown only where we found them on the retailer's own website. Many retailers don't list theirs in the UCA directory. Those show “not published — check provider”, and the default sort leaves admin out so nobody looks cheaper just because their fee is missing. Choose “energy + admin” to rank only plans whose fee is published.

Delivery charges are the same whichever retailer you choose. The UCA says: That's why delivery appears once, as a constant, instead of in each row.

Your default is the regulated option you have if you've never signed a contract. Its gas price changes every month. For gas we use the past 12 months' actual regulated rates, so the default comparison looks back while fixed rates look forward. Neither is a forecast.

Not ranked: variable “market price + adder” plans (no fixed number to multiply), solar/micro-generation plans (need on-site generation), and time-limited promotions that aren't in the UCA listing. Ties are broken alphabetically.

Before you switch, read the contract: term, exit fee, admin fee, deposit or credit-check (“Prudential”) requirements, and whether the rate covers the whole term. The UCA's free Cost Comparison Tool and helpline (310-4822 in Alberta) can help.

Disclosure (placeholder): NorthNumbers may earn referral fees from some providers in future. If it does, those links will be labelled, and referral fees will never change the order of this list. That order comes only from the numbers above. Today there are no paid relationships.
